The Idea of North The Idea of North defy categorisation. As a quartet of musicians, their voices are their instruments: soprano, alto, tenor and bass, with some vocal percussion thrown in. They’re serious about their music without taking themselves too seriously. Their sound and style is distinct, yet they cross many musical genres: jazz, folk, gospel, pop, classical, even comedy. You’ll hear songs you know and songs you don’t and astonishing arrangements of these songs, performed with great sensitivity and great energy by great performers. You’ll walk away having enjoyed it so much you won’t have noticed you just heard instrument-free music. You’ll have trouble describing it to your friends. “A Cappella” just doesn’t seem to do it justice. What started out as four students from the Canberra School of Music at the Australian National University kicking around as friends, has resulted in a group which has won international recognition, taken home awards such as the USA’s “Harmony Sweepstakes” (the first non-US group to win this prestigious award) and Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards for Best Jazz Album and Best Jazz Song, as well as mesmerised fans across Australia and around the world. “ … as near as dammit to vocal perfection.” "A cappella is sometimes thought of as being minimalist, but when you can sing and entertain like The Idea of North, a band would just get in the way …” “Impeccable a cappella… they have class stamped over everything they do. Catch them and marvel.” When are they on? Saturday September 13, 8pm
