The Cleftomaniacs

Cleftomaniacs

With a maniacal interest in all matters musical, The Cleftomaniacs are a community choir with a reputation for taking what doesn't belong to them and making it theirs. The Cleffies pride themselves on their broad-ranging repertoire. They aren't afraid to tackle daunting classical polyphony one minute then throw their energy into a pop song the next.  Jacks of all trades and masters of them all!

The Cleftomaniacs date back to 1992 when the Sydney a cappella resurgence was in its infancy.  Dale Caldwell (of ‘Voices From the Vacant Lot’ fame) was their founding Musical Director.  She nurtured the choir through its first exciting decade, then entrusted them to their current MD, Gary Smith.  Gary's style and energy was well described in a recent piece on the Cleftomaniacs: "He is fun to watch. Barefoot, upbeat and involved" (SMH June 20, 2008).

Performances by the Cleftomaniacs have included community festivals, gigs at the Art Gallery of NSW, private functions – weddings, parties, christenings, corporate – and they also enjoy promoting their own concerts to showcase their repertoire of classical, madrigal, gospel, swing, jazz, folk, and pop.  For a change of pace, in 2004 the Cleftomaniacs staged a hugely successful performance of the Purcell opera, ‘Dido and Aeneas’.  What will they think of next?
