Festival Background

Noticing reduced opportunities for a cappella groups to share a Sydney stage, a choir called The Cleftomaniacs decided to risk their small non-profit-organisation bank balance and do something about it by creating an event that would bring together the a cappella community in performance.

The intention was to attract and showcase the many talents and wide-ranging musical styles of this large and vibrant community of a cappella singers.  And to introduce the joys and very tangible benefits of singing to new audiences, secret singers and innocent bystanders who had never considered it, let alone heard the term a cappella!  Perhaps, also, to unearth a hidden gem or two.

The word went out.  A few cappella enthusiasts got together to form a (very!) small team. Lists were compiled, phone calls were made, emails were sent.  The word came back:  performers were keen.  A venue was secured, a website was put together and, voila! … The Sydney A Cappella Festival 2008 was a happenin’ thang.

Of course, the lists, emails and phone calls continued.  It was a small, hardworking team of singers who volunteered their time, skills and energy to get the Festival together.  Go team.

If you’d like to register your interest in performing next year, use the online performer registration form to tell us who you are and what you do.  We certainly hope the event continues into 2009 and beyond.

We hope you enjoyed the Festival, whichever side of the stage you were on!
